President’s Letter – September 2011
It is important that I inform you on the fact that this article was written on Friday August 26th (Due to a printing Deadline). Reason being, this is just prior to what will be remembered as Hurricane Irene. I did not want to appear insensitive to anyone in the event this large and dangerously forecasted storm creates any severe damage & or injury. Like many, I am very concerned for all of our neighbors especially those south of the Holbrook community.
On a much brighter note, the Chamber had another successful Carnival & Craft festival back in mid August. Once again, we hosted attendees in the thousands and everyone had a wonderful time enjoying all of the food, fun, fireworks and entertainment. Even though we had a thunder & lightning storm cut the opening night short and more rain to close the fair earlier on Sunday, we still had another amazing weekend at our 17th Annual Fair.
The Chamber would like to thank all of our members who helped sponsor our rides & entertainment. Without these generous members this event would not be possible. Next time you visit one of our Chamber Fair sponsors please thank them if you recall having seen one of their signs, it would really mean a lot.
A super special thanks to Bea Hoffer from the Our Place Newspapers for chairing another great committee. Thank you to our Board of Directors, Carnival Committee Members, and our Fair Volunteers. We are very grateful to the Suffolk County Police Department for their enormous presence and in maintaining everyone’s safety. Bill Hagemeyer, we cannot thank you enough for all of your help in both getting the fair up and running and helping out the entire weekend. It is people like Bill who do all of the little things behind the scenes that make our fair a success.
A special thank you, to the Sachem School District for being ever so kind to the Chamber year in and year out. It is truly a pleasure to work with such a great group of cooperative and supportive individuals. The Chamber could not thank both Superintendant James Nolan and the entire School Board enough for their hospitality.
Thank you to Keith and the Outback staff for providing another generous contribution to the Chamber. We were happy to have the Irish Times join us down at the fair; their boneless buffalo bites were delicious.
Tom from Asgard Entertainment did an incredible job of emceeing the entire weekend for us. We cannot thank him and his staff enough for providing hours of great music and entertainment.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Rose Brucia Foundation. We really enjoyed promoting our Stranger Safety Awareness theme with you this year. We wish you continued success with your wonderful organization.
Last but by no means least, thank you to our good friends over at the Holbrook Fire Department. Neil Heffernan and his team did a super job promoting fire and first-aid safety for many of the children who attended this year. The Chamber salutes all of the volunteers who were down at the fair working with the Junior Firefighter Program. We hope they join us again next year.
On a separate subject, a lot of work is getting done in and around town the past few months. Our Vice President Kevin Guilfoyle will report on all of the projects in our October Chamber Column.
I hope and pray the hurricane will be just a distant memory by the time one reads this column. Good Luck to all of our students who will be going back to school. Enjoy the transition from summer to fall where Long Island is truly a beautiful place to be this time of year.
In closing, the Chamber would like to invite everyone down to our next Free summer concert on Saturday evening September 10th at 7 P.M. located on the grounds of the Holbrook Country Club. This free outdoor event will feature the Rolling Stones tribute band “Streetfighter”. The concert is sponsored by Legislator Bill Lindsay in association with Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan and yours truly the Holbrook Chamber. We hope to see you there!
All the Best Always,
President, Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
