President’s Letter – December 2011
Once again, it’s that most wonderful time of the year. That time of year where we all get caught up in the good old hustle bustle of the holiday season. Most of us will moan and groan a bit about all of the extra pressure of decorating, shopping, and cooking on top of the normal everyday responsibilities we have to attend to like working and taking care of the kids. Yes, it truly does require a lot of additional work and effort during the holiday season but who’s kidding who…many of us wouldn’t trade it for the world.
As I write this column, our good friends from the Holbrook Fire Department are busy installing the Chamber’s annual holiday lights throughout town. Thankfully for them, the temperatures are unseasonably warm which makes a difficult task like hanging those decorations 15-20 feet in the air a little more tolerable. The Chamber along with everyone else in the community who appreciates the festive and warm feeling the decorations provide cannot thank the Holbrook Fire Department enough for their wonderful assistance.
Don’t forget to load a few “save the date” events into those smart phones. On Saturday December 3rd @ 4:30 P.M. over at the Irish Times Shopping Center the Chamber will host its annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony complete with a visit from Santa on none other than a Holbrook Fire Dept. truck. We will also be joined by the St. John’s Lutheran Church Choir and of course our very own 2011-2012 Little Mr. & Miss Holbrook. There will be candy canes and coloring books as well as the opportunity for all of the kids (from 1-92) to meet Santa and don’t forget mom & dad to bring those cameras for some great pictures.
Another special save the date for the Chamber is on Tuesday December 20th, @ 6 P.M. located at Friendly Drugs where we will host our annual Menorah Lighting on the first night of Chanukah. Our good friend and resident of Holbrook Rabbi Moss will be on hand to preside over the lighting ceremony. The Chamber cannot thank Rabbi Moss enough for joining us every year for as long as this old President can remember. Once again, we will be joined by our current Little Mr. & Miss Holbrook and hot chocolate & cookies will be served.
As the Union Ave and Furrows Road infrastructure repair projects finally reach completion one can really appreciate both the aesthetic improvements as well as more clearly defined roadways. This should hopefully make for a much better driving experience in those areas. The Chamber is currently in the process of inquiring about turning arrows for the traffic lights at the Furrows Rd. /County Route 19 and Union Ave and Main St. intersections. From a safety and navigational perspective this appears to be highly necessary. The HESS service station is another long anticipated improvement that appears to be progressing nicely as I write. All of these new improvements and enhancements add to Holbrook becoming an even nicer place to live, visit, work and of course shop. Thanks to some highly cooperative government officials and the efforts of the Chamber the community is truly developing nicely. We still have our share of work to go but it is nice to finally witness some of the fruit from all of our labor.
On behalf of the Chamber, I would like to thank all of the residents who came out and supported many of the local merchants on “Small Business Saturday” this past November 26th. Having such a great loyal group of residents who have always supported the local stores, restaurants and services within the entire Holbrook business community is extremely motivational to the Chamber and its members. Thank you for helping us keep our community alive and thriving even in these difficult economical times. We know you have a choice and we truly appreciate you choosing to keep it local.
In closing, let me let you run and get all that holiday shopping done. Don’t forget to give thanks and do something nice for someone else in the spirit of this wonderful season.
Best wishes for a beautiful holiday and a happy & healthy New Year!
Rick Ammirati, President Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
