President’s Letter – January 2012
Happy New Year,
Yeah, we made another year and now 2012 is here! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season spending time with their family and friends. The Chamber is pleased to report that we hosted two very successful and well attended holiday lighting ceremonies last month. A special thanks to our good friends at the Holbrook Fire Department, for delivering Santa on their beautiful holiday float. Much thanks to the Holbrook F.D.’s Ladies Auxiliary for providing delicious hot chocolate for many of our guests. The Chamber would like to thank the owners of Irish Times for serving coffee to many of the attendees at the tree lighting as well. Once again, deepest thanks to both the St. John’s Lutheran & Abundant Life Church Choirs for their beautiful and harmonious singing of many of the traditional holiday classics. Thank you to Rabbi Steven Moss from the B’nai Israel Temple in Oakdale, for presiding over our Menorah lighting ceremony. Rabbi Moss is a dear friend of the Chamber and a Holbrook resident whom we are very proud to have as our neighbor.
The Chamber would like to thank the Holbrook Fire Department for another superb performance with the installation of our holiday decorations along Main Street, Furrows & Union Ave. Special thanks to Neil Heffernan and his entire team for lighting up the business community for this festive season.
Looking forward to the New Year, the Chamber is planning to continue on its beautification of the business community mission. Although government dollars are becoming scarce, we hope that with a combination of new members joining our organization and another successful Annual Fair we will be able to continue our maintenance program and fund a few smaller planting projects. The Chamber will also be looking to add more holiday lights along the Union Avenue corridor for next year as well. The Furrows Road Project is now complete and is now not only more aesthetically pleasing but also much safer for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Union Ave has been repaved and looks great along with all of the new stamped concrete medians. Nice work by both the State and County Highway Departments. It is truly a great feeling to witness a portion of the hard work and lobbying that the Chamber did several years ago now finally come to fruition.
Going forward, we still have several areas that need improvement both commercially and along some of the roadways. The litter has been a constant battle however we have been able to keep up with most areas via median sponsorships, Chamber funding, Legislator Lindsay’s Community Cleanup Days (2 per year) and with Keep Islip Clean. I always love when a resident or fellow business owner stops me and says the town never looked better. Although the compliments are both well received and humbling, my response is always we still have so much more to do. With the continued community support of our Chamber Member businesses and both residential and commercial participation at our annual fair we will accomplish all we have set out to do in terms of making our town a better place to live, work and shop.
In closing, on behalf of the entire Chamber I wish you and your family a very healthy and happy New Year!
All the Best Always,
President, Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
