President’s Letter – December 2012
Season’s Greetings Everyone,
Whew, well here we are sitting right on the doorstep of the “most wonderful time of the year”. As hard as it may be to believe, another year has just whisked by and now it’s time again for all of the hustle and bustle the holidays will surely provide.
Now anyone who is remotely familiar with this column knows that I am going to talk about keeping as much of the holiday shopping local as possible. Why one might ask? Well here’s a good reason for the season: A large part of this time of year is about doing for others especially those who have also been good to us. Well I can tell you that thanks to the support of many of our Chamber members we hosted a wonderful fair for the entire community back in late August. Additionally, the town has never looked better thanks to the collective efforts of the Chamber and its members. We also have beautiful holiday lights installed along Main St and Union Avenue thanks to both the Chamber and our good friends at the Holbrook Fire Dept. Thanks to the Fire Dept. the Chamber saves a small fortune in install and removal expense year in and year out. We cannot thank them enough both now and throughout the year for being there for our town.
Some other reasons to spend locally for the season, here in Holbrook you have a nice mix of retail stores that sell almost everything one could need for the holidays. We have great restaurants where you can purchase gift cards, there are also many other great gift giving ideas everywhere you look throughout town. Before running off to the big box stores, buying out of state on-line and getting mauled at the mall, check out Holbrook as we have a lot in store. Besides, keeping your dollars local is just plain common sense as most of what you spend stays in town and helps our business community do more than just survive in these challenging fiscal times.
Another great reason to be thankful for our business community is the Annual Holiday Lighting Festivities as follows: The Christmas Tree Lighting will be held on Saturday December 1st (4:30 PM) at the Irish Times shopping center. The tree will be lit at approximately 5 PM, complete with a visit from Santa Claus on a fire truck. Great opportunity to get a picture with Santa and the children, sing along to some Christmas carols while sipping a complimentary hot chocolate from the Holbrook Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. On Saturday December 8th (6 PM) at Friendly Drugs, we will light the Menorah for the 1st night of Chanukah. Sing Chanukah songs along with our dear friend and longtime Holbrook Resident Rabbi Steven Moss while enjoying some hot chocolate provided by the ladies from the Holbrook F.D. Please make it a point to come out and take part in these spirited community events that celebrate the holiday season.
In closing, on behalf of the entire Chamber and its Board of Directors I would like to wish everyone a beautiful holiday and a happy and healthy New Year!
President, Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
