President’s Letter – September 2013
As we close out a beautiful summer it is now time for most of us to get back to school or back to business. Before I start writing about the final stretch of 2013, I would like to reflect on a few of the really nice memories the Chamber made for those who attended both our Summer Concert at the Holbrook Country Club in July and or our Annual Fair over at the Seneca Middle school last month. This year’s concert the Chamber along with Legislator Bill Lindsay and the County of Suffolk hosted an amazing show with the band “Big Shot” who primarily covers the Long Island Superstar Singing Legend Billy Joel. The crowd was close to 1,000 free attendees who were treated to a beautiful evening under the stars where you could close your eyes and feel as if Billy was playing right there on the outdoor Country Club grounds. Thank you, Big Shot, Suffolk Legislator Lindsay, the Town of Islip Parks Department and Trios for assisting the Chamber in putting on another free and fun filled show for our friends and neighbors in Holbrook.
This year, the Chamber held another successful and fun-filled fair where we had everything from exciting rides to great food from a number of our local restaurants along with over 50 craft and merchandise vendors to amazing entertainment all capped off by two nights of incredible fireworks. A special thanks to Bea Hoffer of Our Place Newspapers who is our Committee Chair along with her hardworking and dedicated team of volunteers. There are way too many great volunteers to thank here but without all of their hard work and the generous donations from many of our Chamber Members this would never have been possible. A huge thank you to both Stop-n-Shop and Mamma Lombardi’s for co-sponsoring our two nights of fireworks, we could not have done that without these two very generous contributors. A very special thank you to the Civil Air Patrol who not only kept the event safe all during the weekend but also assisted in keeping the entire school grounds immaculate and free of litter. It was commented on several occasions that we have the “cleanest carnival around”. Additionally, a heartfelt thanks to the Suffolk County P.D. 5th Precinct for providing great coverage throughout the weekend as well. We wish to thank both the Sachem Administration as well as the School Board for allowing us the opportunity to host this wonderful event for the community. Thank you as always to our good friends at the Holbrook Fire Department for protecting us and all the behind the scenes help you provide for us every year at our fair. Last but by no means least, a sincere thank you to the local residents who neighbor the Seneca Middle School property for your patience and perseverance throughout the weekend where you graciously allowed the entire Holbrook Community the opportunity to enjoy the fair again this year.
Now the real work begins for the Chamber. Thanks in part to a successful fair; the Chamber will be purchasing some new holiday decorations for both the Union and Grundy Avenue business areas. Additionally, we will be replacing some of our decorations on Main Street that need as such. Everyone can look forward to a much brighter holiday shopping and dining season in town this December. Thanks to hosting the fair again this year the Chamber can continue to invest in and maintain our beautification efforts throughout the business community and along C.R. 19. Our town will only get better as we move forward on our commitment to making “Holbrook a great place to live, work and shop”.
In closing, we wish the best of luck to all of our students who return to school either locally or out of town. We hope and pray for nothing but the best for our future leaders. Lastly, the Chamber would like to once again thank and wish well our dear friend Legislator Bill Lindsay. Both the entire Chamber Board and I all agree that we could not have had a finer partner in making a change for the better here in Holbrook. Bill, you and your family are forever and always in our prayers.
