President’s Letter – July 2015
Greetings of the summer,
Ah yes, right upon us now and based on popular belief is one of the truly greatest times of the year on Long Island. With some of the nicest beaches in the country, the world renowned Hamptons, Fire Island and of course Montauk and its campgrounds it’s tough not to enjoy where we live right about now. Of course some of you have your own little oasis right in your backyard. Either way, it’s great to be outdoors barbecuing or catering outdoor summer fare.
As Chamber President, what has always concerned me this time of year is locally in town we experience what I call the economy shifting to the shores. Generally, besides the customary vacations many locals head over to Fire Island or out East for their dining and entertainment. When doing so, please consider stopping off at a Chamber member for those summer picnic coolers.
TAG Beverage can offer you your favorite ice cold beverage, Oven Lovin can make you a delicious sandwich you definitely won’t find on the beach. Early morning, stop in and see Larry at Holbrook Bagels before you hit the road. Too hot to cook? Why not pick up a delicious pizza at Carlos or Joe’s. You can also enjoy a nice salad or burger over at the Holbrook Diner; try some delicious Mediterranean cuisine at the new Hummus, Karvers in the Commons has great summer drink specials as well. If you need a new grill or your BBQ tank filled, drop in and see the Propane Guys they will get you cooking. Next month, I will spotlight a few other members we don’t want you to forget about this summer. You can find all of these members’ contact info either on-line at holbrookchamber.com or in our chamber directory located within the Our Place Newspaper. Tell them Rick from the chamber sent you as I have sampled them all dozens of times.
The chamber has been busy with meetings over at both Islip and Brookhaven. As many of you know, the dividing border of townships in Holbrook is the railroad track. That being said, we have been working closely with both Islip Planning Commissioner Rich Zapolski as well as Brookhaven Town Councilman Neil Foley on a collaborative visioning study for both the Main Street and Union Avenue corridors. Some of the plans we’re discussing won’t come to fruition until years from now but it’s important we start discussing what our downtown will need in the future to not only remain economically viable but also relevant. I will defer to our Vice President Kevin Guilfoyle who is proficient with land use and permits to articulate the details in our August column.
Don’t forget to save the dates for our Annual Chamber Carnival & Craft Festival. This year it will be held over on the grounds of the Seneca Middle School from Thursday August 13th through Sunday the 16th. We will have our spectacular fireworks shows on both Thurs and Sat evenings along with fun filled rides, games, great food and on Saturday and Sunday we will have our craft & gift vendors on hand.
Special thanks to all of our generous members who have already sponsored rides and a super thank you to both Stop-n-Shop and the Lombardi Family for sponsoring this year’s fireworks. A huge thank you to Suffolk County along with our County Legislator Bill Lindsay for sponsoring all of the entertainment throughout the entire weekend.
For all of our other members who have not yet sent in a carnival sponsorship, please consider supporting this wonderful event for OUR community. The chamber can only make a difference with your support.
In closing, the entire chamber Board wishes everyone a very safe and happy Fourth of July! Enjoy your summer and see you at the fair in August or perhaps at one of our wonderful chamber establishments.
All the Best Always,
Rick Ammirati, President
Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
