President’s Letter – May 2016
With spring now in full bloom here on the Island, we are now on the precipice of why this is one of the most beautiful places to be for spring and summer. Long Island which many locals take for granted weather wise is a true tourist destination during the summer. Two words… the Hamptons… two more: Fire Island, and of course Montauk.
Later this month the Chamber shall hold our annual Memorial Day Parade where we traditionally honor and remember all of the men and women who have served and fought for our freedom. This year promises to be even more special as Holbrook now has our very own AMVETS Post 1174. The Holbrook charter was officially granted at a ceremony I had the honor of attending earlier last month.
On Memorial Day at 6:30 AM, the annual “Sunrise Ceremony” with a 21 gun salute shall take place at the Holbrook Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Grundy Avenue. It is the Chamber’s hope that everyone deploys a “Mind-Over-Mattress” (to quote Phil Lorito, VFW Post 9486) mentality and joins us for this truly touching tribute to our military. I plan on attending my first this year and hope you all make a small sleep sacrifice to pay respects for one huge sacrifice made for us all.
On Saturday May 21, in association with Legislator Bill Lindsay’s office, the Chamber & Holbrook Beautification Committee will be hosting our semi-annual Cleanup Day. We will meet at the Seneca Middle School between 8:30 and 9 AM. This is a great opportunity to come out and help clean up the Holbrook Business community as well as the Patchogue-Holbrook Road and Broadway Avenue corridors. Legislator Lindsay’s office also offers a letter of community service acknowledgement for any student who volunteers in the cleanup. Come help us make a diference for Holbrook.
Along with our Veterans this month, let’s please not forget our Moms. Make sure you consider all of our fine Chamber Member restaurants first when choosing a nice place to take that special lady in your life. Of course Nature’s Designs can make you a beautiful bouquet and Ingrid at Kiersten’s Jewelers always has something special for that one of a kind lady in your life.
In closing, it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to one of the most gifted entertainers of our time… Prince! He was a great inspiration and influence in my life and I am forever grateful to have literally been touched by his presence and music. Rest in Purple… Prince!
