President’s Letter – June 2018

Greetings,

Welcome to our monthly chamber update. After a rather soggy spring, many of us are hopeful to see some sun and reap the benefits of showers making flowers. It used to be “April showers bring May flowers” however it appears that our seasonal transitions have been a bit delayed the past few years.

The Holbrook Chamber has been extremely busy the past few months meeting with our public officials in an effort to get some much needed infrastructure work done in town. In our meeting with Islip Town Highway Commissioner Tom Owens, our request to have the Islip portion of Main Street swept and restriped was granted immediately. Less than 2 weeks later the work was completed and the roadway is now much safer. We also met with Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley who is working with their DPW to have the north section of Main St and Union Ave. both repaired and restriped. Additionally, he is seeking increased lighting and a guardrail near the chamber berm by 7/11 which is also a safety hazard.

At the meeting with Islip, we continued talks on the long proposed (20 plus years now) redevelopment and infrastructure repair project at the northwest corner of Furrows & Main St. The Islip Town Attorney along with the chamber have been making renewed efforts to sit down with the property owner again as something desperately needs to be done with that corner. Currently there are no sidewalks or handicap ramps and there a few utility poles sitting outside the curb line in Furrows Rd. This is not only a continued eyesore but even more importantly a
safety issue. Additionally, the hairpin turn as you head south off Main St and onto Furrows Rd. west is becoming increasingly more dangerous.

The chamber has also recently been involved in conversation with the developers and engineering firm that are proposing a new 17,500 cultural/multipurpose seat arena, sports training complex, sports medicine hospital, hotel with a convention center along with several tiered parking garages & additional surface parking. The chamber has a number of concerns with this large of a development just 1.1 mile west of our downtown. Traffic mitigation specifically east of the project along an already highly congested Union Avenue is one of our largest and most obvious concerns. We will continue to meet with all of the public officials and principals involved and keep everyone updated on any progress that occurs with regard to the Holbrook Business District.

On Saturday June 9 th , thanks to the County of Suffolk and Legislator Bill Lindsay along with the Town of Islip, the chamber will be co-hosting another FREE concert on the grounds of the Holbrook Country Club. The concert will start at noon and will run until 9 PM with 5 different bands performing over a 9 hour period. We will have live outdoor music from different decades and genres and something for everyone to enjoy. Trio will be serving food, wine & beer for purchase in their food tent. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and arrive whenever you can throughout the day and into the evening. This promises to be a fun filled day of music right on the grounds of the Holbrook Country Club, 700 Patchogue/Holbrook Road.

In closing, a very Happy Father’s Day to all of our Dads whom helped shape and mold us into the people we are today. Last but not least…a huge congratulation to all of our Sachem Graduates and college graduates as well! Job
well done and best of luck with your future!!!

All the best Always,

Rick Ammirati
