President’s Letter – August 2018

Greetings of the summer season,

The weather although a little warm and muggier than most would prefer at times, has for the most part been very nice thus far. Having just surpassed the midpoint of summer, the chamber is hopeful we will enjoy seasonably beautiful weather down at the fair from August 16th thru the 19th. Once again, we will be hosting our 24th Annual Fair on the grounds of the Holbrook Country Club. We do hope the community comes out to support this wonderful event where there is something for everyone. Please check the Holbrookchamber.com website for more details on the festivities and schedule.

The chamber is pleased to announce that the Holbrook business community has been approved for a Regional Plan Association (RPA) study and review through the offices of Suffolk County Economic Development. This is big news as the business district will receive a full visioning study to determine what private and governmental resources can be deployed from both a planning and implementation perspective. Working closely with Legislator Lindsay’s office, an advisory committee comprised of local Holbrook residents, business and commercial property owners along with executive board members of the chamber, we will all help guide and provide critical input with the unified vison of improving our downtown for the future.

The study will take into account the need for new attractions, businesses, mixed use with a possible residential component and other medical and office use that is determined to become more prevalent in the near future. Additionally, feasibility and funding for much needed sewers along with infrastructure/roadway improvements shall also be discussed and submitted for the study. This is a big first step in moving the business district into the future in an effort to become more economically viable and relevant as compared with the development that is occurring over at the Ronkonkoma Hub and future Islip Pines projects.

Kevin Guilfoyle, chamber VP and land-use expert along with yours truly will keep you posted on the RPA Study in future columns. As of late July, there have been no further developments to the chambers’ knowledge on the south end of the Hub with respect to the proposed arena/convention center.

We trust everyone has noticed the chambers’ continued efforts with respect to our landscaping and maintenance program along the north gateway to the Holbrook Community. Thanks to chamber funds and the fine efforts of Briguglio Quality Cuts, the welcome sign wall, 7/11 berm area and surrounding medians are now weed free and routinely manicured. This is all due to the generous support of our chamber members who in large part have once again sponsored our annual fair. Please support all of our members where and whenever possible. I implore everyone to first visit Holbrookchamber.com every time you need a service or product that can be obtained locally.

On June 20th, the Holbrook Community and Fire Department lost another longtime and well-loved member in Bill Heffernan. Bill was a dear friend to many gave of himself freely to help others in need and will forever be missed by both his lovely family and those of us who had the distinct honor of having known him.

On behalf of the entire chamber Board, we wish you a fun and safe rest of the summer and hope to see you down at the Fair from the 16th-19th of this month.

All the Best Always,

Rick Ammirati
President, Holbrook Chamber of Commerce
