President’s Letter – March 2020

Greetings,

Welcome to almost spring! March reminds us to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and start those spring cleanups. Put them both together and you get Irish Spring. Hey, the Our Place Newspaper is known for the best corny jokes you can find, sometimes it’s good to lighten up and laugh.

Speaking of a good laugh. It’s hard to believe 21 years ago this month I wrote my first column as chamber president. As we all say… where did the time go??? As time moves on and we get older many like to reflect on the past. However, when it comes to business you might learn from the past but to be successful you have to look and think forward.

It is in that spirit that my partner & Vice President Kevin Guilfoyle of 21 years, our longtime Treasurer Fred Coste and a longstanding as well as loyal Board of Directors are looking forward to making changes within the downtown business community.

Over the next few years we will hopefully secure sewers and with the cooperation of both townships, subsequent zone changes and thus develop a plan to buildup the downtown while maintaining some of the local charm we have all grown to love. Of course until we get the sewer capacity all else is purely just a pipe dream…pun intended.

I would like to personally thank Legislator Anthony Piccirillo for appointing yours truly to the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Committee.

This is a huge opportunity for Holbrook to have a seat on this committee which makes decisions and votes on County expenditures for capital improvements in Suffolk downtowns.

While the intent shall be to support all of our neighboring communities, I plan on being a voice that ensures Holbrook too obtains it’s fair share of grant money for our downtown. We’re in many ways overdue in Holbrook and I would like to again thank Legislator Piccirillo for recognizing that and doing something about it in his first full month in office.

On behalf of the chamber, I would like to recognize and thank longtime Chamber Board Member Fern Spies for her many years of service.
A former Holbrook Chamber co-President along with her husband George she was a tremendous asset to the Holbrook Business Community and we cannot thank her enough as she steps down and moves out of the Holbrook Business area after 40 plus years at Spies Travel.

Fern, it’s been an honor to work with you within the chamber and your wisdom, experience and guidance is something I shall treasure for the rest of my professional life.

In closing, you don’t want to miss the Annual St. Patrick’s Day 5k run on Saturday, March 21st at 8:30 for the Kids Run and 9 for the main race. Check our chamber website for details. Please have a very happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day.

Humble is the Heart of Holbrook!
